Daddy Freeze Tells His Story How He Wanted To be A Musician and How Wizkid is Living His Dream

In a recent post on instagram, the popular OAP said he wanted to be a musical artist at the age of 17. He also stated that wizkid is living his dream on his behalf.

In his words; ”as a 17 year old, all I wanted to be was a globally recognized rapper. My doctor dad and professor of Law mum had other plans for me. They wanted me to be a doctor, but I wasn’t having it.

With dreamy eyes I gazed upon the primitive successes of rappers like Vanilla Ice, Mc Hammer, LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Scarface, Naughty by Nature, Kriss Kross, Das EFX, Heavy D and Fushnickens.

Back then in the early 90s, the Nigerian music industry was not very accommodating for rappers, as the then famous Benson & Hedges gold n tones did not feature a single rapper, instead we had the likes of Onyeka Onwenu and Mike Okri.

Seeing that rap was a hard sell with groups like Junior & Pretty, Emphasis youth and a sprinkling of others struggling to break barriers, I diverted my attention to R&B and POP.

In 1996, after a brief stint on the radio in Romania, I returned home and auditioned for a job with BCOS in Ibadan, hoping that through the radio I would be able to make contacts and promote my music.

In 1997 I released my first single, ‘partners in crime’ with my good friend, who also happened to be another University of Ibadan rapper called Chucksie B. It was successful on the radio, but the success ended there.

In the year 2000, I came up with another single titled ‘The Show’. I took it to CoolFM for promotion and ran into Olisa Adibua, who gave me a bit of promo, but was more interested in my radio exploits.

In 2001 I was offered a job in CoolFM and my excitement to finally have an opportunity to pursue my music was short lived, because unlike BCOS, CoolFM was a 9-5 and they owned all my time. So slowly reality set in and my music dreams faded into oblivion.

Now turning my full concentration on radio, I began to live my dreams through people like Wizkid who have managed through unusual talent and perseverance, to bring to the light, what I dreamed of 30 years ago.
